Gateway
When the network that must be connected are using completely different protocols from each other however, a more powerful and intelligent device is required. A Gateways is a device that can interpret and translate the different protocols that are used on two distinct networks.
It functions at the network layer of OSI model.
Gateway can actually convert data so that it works with an application on a computer on other side of the Gateway.
For example a Gateway can received email message in one format and can convert them into another format we can connect a system with different communication protocol language and architecture using a gateway
Types of Gateway:
1) unidirectional gateway:
Unidirectional gateway allows data to flow in only one direction.
2) Bidirectional gateway:
they allow data to flow in both Direction they can be used as synchronization tool
Gateway function and features:
Multi protocol supports:
Gateway a designed to support our range of protocol to make it easier to set up interference between two different networks.
Visibility:
gateway are use at network boundaries giving them unmached visibility into the traffic crossing these boundaries.
Security :
being located at the network boundary it provides them visibility and controlled security. Gateway can include Firewall function, transmitting or blocking network traffic, based upon corporate network security policy.
