About Sangai Festival:
- The Sangai, a brow-antlered deer found solely in Manipur, is the state animal and the inspiration for the festival’s name.
- The Manipuri people’s zeal and passion are celebrated during the festival.
- It celebrates the biodiversity of India.
- The Manipur Sangai Festival contributes to the promotion of Manipur as a premier travel destination.

Sangai deer:
- The only place where this rare subspecies of brow-antlered deer may be found is Manipur.
- Its natural habitat is only found in Keibal Lamjao National Park, which also contains the phumdis (floating wetlands) of Loktak Lake.
Protection status:
- The IUCN Red List –> “Endangered.”
- Schedule I of the Indian Wild Life (Protection) Act of 1972 includes it.
- The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora lists it in Appendix 1.
