Story of Guru Nanak
As indicated by Sikh custom, it is said that Nanak had a heavenly vision at 30 years old when he was out for his day by day ablutions. He didn’t get back that day and everyone thought of him as dead. Nanak notwithstanding, returned following three days and advised individuals that he was taken to god’s court and was offered Amrit – nectar. Nanak also told them that God has no religion and that one should follow the path of God. Since then, people started calling him Guru or teacher and Guru Nanak became the teacher of Sikhism.
When it is Started
The celebrations of Guru Nanak Jayanti begin with early morning processions at Gurudwaras known as Prabhat pheri and spread to the neighborhood. People perform the Katha – exposition of the scriptures – and Kirtan- hymns from the Sikh scriptures – in the worship of Guru Nanak. These festivities are colorful – especially in places like Punjab and Harayana.
